It is an undeniable fact that there are times in sports when two competing sides have a huge difference in class and potential. While there are also many instances of David defeating Goliath, this is rather rare. There was no point in betting on the outcome of such an event. No bookmaker will offer odds worthy of their name for the act of “shooting a cannon at a sparrow”. Unless, of course, there is an advantage that equalizes the situation on the playing field.
However, people still want to bet on these matches and want to make a decent profit from it. This is a business that no self-respecting betting establishment will ignore. The solution of the question gives the concept of Handicap (handicap) . What it actually does is provide a starting advantage to the weaker side in the equation. For example, if team A is expected to easily win a game against team B, the handicap would say that in order to win a bet that provides a decent profit for team A, they must win by at least 3 or 4 goals. Otherwise, all bets in favor of Team B will win.

There are two main options. The European Handicap introduces half the spread (1.5, 2.5, 3.5, etc.). The Asian Handicap develops this concept by introducing quarters (0.25, 1.75, 2.25, etc.). Essentially, the latter eliminates the tie as a result, limiting the possible outcomes to only two.
Choosing a quarter bet effectively splits the bet into 2 parts. The first part is half a decimal place below the threshold, and the second part is an equivalent above. If you choose a 1.25 handicap, then half of your bet is applied to the 1.00 handicap and the other half to the 1.50 handicap.
Asian handicap options
The introduction of quarters does not mean there are no other options:
- Full block or standard: This option does not include decimals, i.e. you get +1.00, -2.00, +3.00, etc… If the outcome is a draw, then you get your money back.
- Half: Odds are given in half decimal (0.5, 1.5, 2.5, etc.) and ties are completely excluded from the outcome. Therefore, a bet cannot be returned and all bets are settled as won or lost.
- Zero: In essence, this handicap is similar to a «bet without a draw.» This does not give an advantage to the weaker side. In the event of a tie, all bets will be void and bets will be refunded.
- Three Quarters or Quarter Handicaps: Here the stakes are divided into 2 parts as described above. The type reduces the chances of a complete loss of the bet to a minimum. The two parts are calculated independently of each other, allowing for a number of combinations, such as half bet won and half returned, or half lost and half won.
Handicaps are one of the most popular types of bets. Usually because the odds offered in favor of the «weak» side are higher than the corresponding odds given to the «strong» side. They provide the opportunity to make some pretty decent profits on matches where looking for it can lead to other markets or special bets.
