Bookmakers are the corner stone of the entire online betting industry. It’s the companies that actually make the entire process of wagering for large numbers of people a reality. Before their emergence, it was only a matter of figuring it out between just small groups. At first and before the internet became available, the word referred to people standing outside sports’ venues with pen and paper noting down the stakes. Ever since the venture went online, everything changed.

Nowadays, there are plenty of online betting establishments that offer the service. Some of them are better than others and clearly form a select group under the designation of the top European and Asian bookmakers. Some of them are offering all the options that serve their clientele, while others are heavily focused on specific sports and markets.

Bookmakers' Categorization

In essence there are 2 kinds of bookmakers:

A. The sportsbooks

They are also known as fixed-odds bookies. They release lists of sporting events and markets where, their research teams, have predetermined sets of odds. Players can take it or leave it. They cannot change the offer. They can only make a selection and decide on the amount for the stake. In essence, bettors try to beat the house.

B. The exchanges

Exchanges allow players to play against each other and make a profit out of charging a commission for the transaction. For every bet one bettor places, there must be another punter to place the exactly opposite wager so that the 2 can be matched. As long as a bet remains unmatched it is not accepted. While exchanges do make an initial offer on odds and markets, the customers may ask for prices on their own. Everything is acceptable as long as there is another person to respond positively to the question.

Perhaps the greatest feature of betting exchanges is the ability they afford to their customers to place “lay” bets. For the uninitiated this means wagering against something happening during the course of a match. This option actually allows for a greater number of betting options than the simple betting on what an outcome will be.

An issue to consider

The hardship for the common punter is to determine which bookmaker is reliable and which is a fraud. It’s a process that may take quite an amount of time. This is where betting brokers  get involved. There’s a discussion on what exactly they do on our relevant publication so please feel free to visit and learn more.

The point is that if people decide to open an account via an agent/broker they can enjoy a number of advantages. That being said, it does not mean that anyone should not consider doing the same in any single bookmaker. There are other to perks to enjoy that can make the betting experience a top class one.
