Initially, it was to be named Ras Abu Aboud Stadium. It is the first modular, built from shipping containers, stadium of the world. The name 974 is derived from the international telephone dialing code for Qatar and the number of the containers used for its construction. 40,000 spectators will watch each of the 6 matches that will be held there for the group stage and the one for the round of 16. After the tournament the containers will be dismantled and donated to under-developed countries.
