THINGS TO REMEMBER
A lot of pioneering events in this one:
- The first time a tournament was co-hosted by two countries;
- The first competition to be held away from Europe or The Americas;
- The first time an Asian team (South Korea) made it to the semi finals;
- Brazil became the one and only participant to have won five trophies;
- Turkey scored the fastest goal in a World Cup to the date (10.8 seconds after the start);
- It was also the last time that the rule of the “golden goal” or “sudden death” was used.
Perhaps a subject that was quite notable for the players, but not the fans, was the ball of the tournament itself. It was a completely new design that they all called “the balloon” as no one knew where it would end up after it was kicked.
