THINGS TO REMEMBER
The format that is applied until today was tested in France for the first time. It was the second expansion of the participating teams from 24 to 32. Other new features came in the form of the use of electronic boards instead of cardboards, new rules such as the short-lived “golden goal” (or sudden death), the prohibition of tackles from behind, and the allowance of a third substitution per game. France became the seventh national team to win a World Cup and the sixth to do so as a host.
