THINGS TO REMEMBER

This was the first World Cup to effectively use the concept of goal average as a way of resolving ties. Unfortunately, the event was tarnished by ferocity among players on the pitch. The title for the most violent match ever played in a final stage, was awarded to the confrontation between the hosts Chile and Italy. Deservedly it is known as the “Battle of Santiago”. 2 players were sent off, punches were exchanged, while the Chilean police was forced to intervene and interrupt the game four times. The good that came out of it was that the referee Ken Aston invented the yellow and red cards to avoid such incidents. For the record, Chile won the game by 2-0.
