WORLD CUP HISTORY
If talking about World Cup, this is probably the competition that gathers the most sports fans. Definitely all of the football ones and even some neutrals. Some even claim that it is more important than even the Olympic Games. That should not be a surprise as the draft of the concept was conceived during an Olympiad edition. As it stands now, it is conducted every four years, two years after the year the Olympics are held. And it is every four years that even those who may have not considered the option before, look for the best European and Asian bookmakers to open accounts at.
The hosts
Every edition is held in a different continent. Up to 1994 the selection was made only between Europe and South America as these where the areas where the sport was flourishing. The first attempt to change that, was made with the assignment of the 1994 edition to the United States. In fact, in 2002, it wasn’t just an organization by a part of the world where people did not prefer football. It was also a first test of the proposition for the tournament to be hosted by more than one countries. Both pioneering endeavours have been met with great success.
Now, all continents have been included in the selection pool with the only one remaining to be used as host is Oceania. And since, as of the 23rd edition of the Cup, there will be 48 teams instead of 32, it is more than likely that we will see cooperation between two or maybe even three countries, to serve as hosts.
The participants
At first countries participated by invitation. Nowadays, and because there are so many candidates, there is a qualification process out of which the team to go to the final stage is decided. That being said, there are a few limitations. As it stands now, Europe can only have 13 representatives, 1 position is taken by the host nation, Asia and South America get between 4 and 5 tickets, Africa gets 5, While Oceania gets to complete for one ticket. Central and North America, along with the Caribbean receive another 3 or 4 sports. As of 2006, the defending champions no longer receive an automatic qualification, but need to participate in the initial process.
